Offshore concrete structures are today designed using the best available techniques. These include predictions of the force resultants in the structure using Global FE analysis (GFEA) with up to 1.5 million degrees of freedom, code checking of GFEA results using special dedicated post-processing software and local capacity evaluations in areas where the linear GFEA are known to be inaccurate. Further, special analyses are carried out to predict the response from earthquake, wave induced dynamic action and geometric non-linear action. This paper describes how an independent verification of the DRAUGEN Concrete Gravity Base Structure (GBS) in the North Sea was carried out. The paper discusses important findings from the work which may be of help for future design. The paper finally recommends a verification model of deep water offshore platforms based on the experience gained through this work.
