Nitrophenolic compounds are widely used in industry as intermediates in the production of pesticides, dyes and explosives, becoming common contaminants. Oxidative as well as reductive reactions are known to initiate degradation of nitrophenolic compounds. Recently an alternative pathway for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol by a Arthrobacter sp. has been described. The present paper describes the reductive metabolism of ortho-substituted 2,4-dinitrophenol as structural analogs of picric acid and gives further support to its hydrogenation as the critical initial reaction. 35 refs., 9 figs., 4 tabs.
