Measurements of the neutron energy spectrum of the spontaneous fission of $sup 252$Cf

Two energy spectra of the neutrons emitted in the spontaneous fission process of /sup 252/Cf were measured in the neutron energy range between 0.15 and 15 MeV using nanosecond time-of-flight technique. In the first experiment the gamma -rays accompanying the fission process were used to generate the time zero signals and in the second case the fission products themselves. As a neutron detector a carefully calibrated fast response detector was generating the timing signals for the neutrons. In both cases the shapes of the spectra agreed with a Maxwellian distribution within the experimental errors. An average energy anti E = 2.13 plus or minus 0.08 MeV was obtained. (GE)
