Absorption and emission of waves generated by an electron beam in an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma

The propagation and damping of waves excited by an electron beam in a plasma has been investigated experimentally in various magnetic field configurations: homogeneous, decreasing, and increasing fields with various degrees of spatial inhomogeneity. In a decreasing magnetic field the possibility of efficient linear absorption of electromagnetic waves excited by a beam in the vicinity of the resonance and the harmonics is demonstrated. Damping at the first three electron cyclotron harmonics is observed on different oscillation branches. The most efficiently absorbed waves are those with frequencies mu / sub c-min/ < omega < omega /sub c-max/ where omega / sub c-min/ and omega / sub c-max/ are the minimum and maximum cyclotron frequencies of the inhomogeneous magnetic field. In an increasing magnetic field the transfomnation of a volume wave into a surface wave is observed in the vicinity of the cyclotron frequency and its harmonics. The effects of wave retardation near resonances and the singularities of the excitation and propagation of waves near the upper hybrid frequency are investigated. (auth)
