In 1956 the Maritime Adminlstration and the Atomic Energy Commission initiated a program to carry forward the construction of the first nuclear- powered merchant ship. Between 1960 and 1965 between five and ten experimental nuclear-powered merchant ve ssels will be built or building. Design, safety, and economic factors are reviewed. (C.H.)
