Liquid flow rates of superfluid helium II during thermomechanical pumping through porous media
From cryogenic engineering conference; Boulder, Colorado, USA (9 Aug 1972). CONF-720803-. The flow rate of He II was investigated experimentally and theoretically as a function of the thermomechanical driving forces for pore sizes of the order of 10/sup 4/ cm magnitude. Attention is focused on the flow phenomena of liquid helium (/sup 4/He), primarily in the superfluid temperature range below the lambda -point. To provide the proper background, the classical porous medium conditions and the experimental arrangement used in this study are reviewed first. Next, a theoretical account is considered based on phenomenological equations. These equations are modified for the conditions of thermomechanical pumping through porous media. Finally, the experimental data are compared with the phenomenological description. (MHR)
