Need for off-diagonal terms in the hypothesis of generalized vector-meson dominance

It is argued that the diagonal ansatz in GVMD models is theoretically unjustified, and it is shown that off-diagonal contributions are necessary to explain recent data on the electroproduction of polarized vector mesons. (auth)
