Incoherent-scattering functions and the Bethe cross sections for Ne and Ar

In Radiological and Environmental Research Division annual report: radiation physics, July 1972--June 1973. Incoherent-scattering functions of Ne and Ar calculated from the Bethe--Goldstone method are presented. These functions are used, in turn, to evaluate parameters for the Bethe cross sections for total inelastic scattering of fast charged particles by Ne and Ar. The cross section for Ne is in close agreement with that by Saxon. For Ar, most experimental data on ionization by electron impact are in agreement (within 10%) with the tentative Bethe cross section for ionization. (3 figures, 2 tables) (auth)
