Sodium gives new challenge to component makers
Three European fast breeder reactor projects are based on the use of liquid sodium as a heat transfer medium. Construction of a commercial prototype is being planned in the USA. In France, the 250 MW(e) Phenix prototype at Marcoule is deliverirg power and an additionnl 1000 MW(e) unit is planned. At Dounreay, Scotland, the 275-MW(e) Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) is in the commissioning test stage. In Germany, the 300 MW(e) SNR 300 prototype is beirg developed with Belgian and the Netherlands. These projects depend on liquid sodium as the primary coolant between the reactor and the turbine steam cycle. The design parameters necessary for the heat exchangers and the circulating pumps with the use of sodium are presented. (MCW)
