The development of nuclear energy in Italy is overshadowed by economic arguments between the champions of private enterprise and those of state monopoly, since it has been recognized that in an industrialized country the utilization of atomic energy will be of vital future importance. Italian atomic research was continued after the war, especially in the field of applied research and atomic engineering, at CISE, Milan, which was started by both private and official groups. (auth)
