Estimate of meteoritic generation of tsunami waves, with explosion effects analysis of the Tunguska meteorite

Meteorite impacts on the ocean could be expected to cause explosions which, if large enough, could create tsunami-like waves resulting in disastrous effects on coastal areas. Available data on impact frequencies, wave generation by near-surface explosions, and wave amplification in shallow water have been used to estimate the hazard frequency. Results show that large waves from such meteoritic sources would occur about as often as comparable sea-level changes from cyclic ice-age glaciation changes. (auth)
