CARBON DIOXIDE ADSORPTION ON THORIA. Technical Report No. 1

Carbon dioxide was adsorbed on samples of thoria having a surface area of 30 m/sup 2//g. The amount adsorbed was measured gravimetrically using a quartz spring and cathetometer. Adsorption isotherms were obtained for a series of temperatures after degassing at 650 deg C. lsosteric heats and enthalpy of adsorption were determined from the adsorption isotherms. The isotherms obtained may be explained by an adsorption process involving a linear variation of adsorption potential with surface coverage. Below approximately 200 deg C an unusual increase in adsorption is observed which can be explained by postulating the presence of two types of adsorption sites. A theoretical interpretation of results is given. (auth)
