Calculation and evaluation of cooling towers, as recommended by Merkel, are critically examined. The usual methods of practical calculation are explained as well as a new procedure which combines great accuracy with brevity. Merkel's method is extended to injection coolers for gas and compressed air. It was discussed whether the dimensionless ''evaporation coefficient'' should be called the''Merkel coefficient.''
