The aqueous solution containing cations is brought into contact with a solid amion exchange substance, insoluble in water and having, at the exchange positions, anions which will form insoluble compounds with the cations. All metal ions exccpt those or alkali metals may be precipitated. These cations may also be separated from each other, or from those of the alkali metals. The precipitate formed on the anion exchange substance may be removed by washing with a suitable aqueous acld or complexing agent. Anion's mentioned are hydroxide, carbonate, sulfide, or chromate.
