THE EFFECTS OF NEUTRON IRRADIATION ON THE DUCTILE-BRITTLE TRANSITION TEMPERATURES OF WELDABLE STRUCTURAL STEEL PLATES. EXAMINATION OF A WELDED DUCOL W.30 STEEL PLATE OF 4 5/8 in. THICKNESS

Neutron irradiation effects on the notched-bar properties of a 4 5/8 in. thick welded Ducol W. 30 steel plate are described. Notched specimens machined from various levels in the parent plate and weld metal were irradiated to integrated neutron doses of 4 x 10/sup 19/ and 7.6 x 10/sup 19/ n/cm/sup 2/ at both 50 to 60 d C and 130 to 140 d C and tested in slow bend. Irradiation increases the ductilebrittle transition temperatures and lowers the maximum (ductile) energies, but the parent plate and weld metal are not equally affected. The magnitudes of the changes are also governed by the temperature of irradiation and the integrated neutron flux. (auth)
