ON YTTERBIUM CITRATE COMPLEXES (in Russian)

The existence of negatively charged ytterbium complexes was confirmed by the ionic exchange method. The conductometric method for determination of compositions of ytterbium complexes with citric acid produced a negative result. The composition and stability of ytterbium citrate complexes at various pH (in the pH interval 3 to 6) and various ratios of nitric acid and ytterbium were found by potentiometric titration. lt is shown that the instability constant of the complex (Yb Cit/sub 2/)/sup 3-/ equals 1 x 10/sup -8/; the ratio of instability constants of (HYbCit/sub 2/)/sup 2-/ and (YbCit/sub 2/)/sup 3-/ equals 10/sup -5/. Formation of complexes (YbOH Cit)/sup -/, (Yb(OH)/sub 3/Cit)/ sup 3-/, and (Yb Cit)/sup -/at pH 5 and 6 and with small quantities of citric acid was observed, and tentative data for the magnitude of their constants of instability (10/sup -6/, 10/sup -36/, and 10/sup -8/, respectively) are included.
