Europe has experienced using solid refuse as fuel for decades. The experiences in Amsterdam and Germany are discussed. In the U. S., if the heat energy in the refuse were converted entirely for the production of electricity, it could produce 10% of electric energy produced from conventional steam generation equipment in 1970. The direct burning of refuse for the release of heat and then steam as in the European experience, has been practiced in St. Louis, Mo. and Lynn, Mass. Other projects are going from trash to fuel, as at Tarrytown, N. Y. and Stamford, Conn. In Baltimore, Md., San Diego, Calif., and Charleston, S. C. facilities are in use that convert refuse to a fuel gas by pyrolysis. In East Bridgewater, Mass. the plant derives solid fuel from solid wastes. This Eco-fuel will generate as much steam as pulverized coal on an equal weight basis when fired in a double-vortex burner. (MCW)
