Estimates for shell deflections of reentry bodies subjected to lateral impulse loads

Formulas for the deflection of elastic rings and finite cylindrical shells with simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are derived for a cosine-distributed impulse over half their circumference. These formulas provide a criterion for the gap selection in magnetically driven flyer plate tests. (auth)
