The method is based on the discovery that the known complexes of zirconium tetrachloride with phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride are smoothly converted to the uncomplexed zirconium tetrachloride by bringing the vapor of the complex into contact with carbon at elevated temperature.
