A U concentrate is prepared by leaching the ore with an aqueous alkali metal carbonate (sodium carbonate) solution (pH ll.8) containing a dissolved persulfate salt, The resulting solution is separated from undissolved matter, and the concentrate then recovered from the solution by adding a water-soluble alkali hydroxide, to precipitate the U as diuranate. Alternatively, an anion-exchange resin may be employed with elution of the adsorbate using an aqueous salt solution. (auth)
