Thoria-Urania Bodies and irradiation Studies

Journal Article · · Journal of the American Ceramic Society
Thoria--urania fuels were irradiated bare and clad in metal jackets of stainless steel, Zircaloy-II, and aluminum-- 1 weight% nickel alloy. These specimens were irradiated in NaK (a sodium-potassium eutectic alloy) and in water. Irradiation severity was based on the total metalatom burnup and on the surface heat flux, and the pellets were evaluated on the basis of dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, and visual analysis. The tests indicated that thoria-- urania solid-solution bodies apparently are suitable for use as fuels in boiling- water reactors.
