The question of the fast neutron absorption is discussed from the point of view of the calibration of neutron moisture gauges. An approximate method is proposed for calculating the probability that the neutron of a given energy would escape the absorption during slowing down in the medium. The method is employed for the water-saturated sandstone, limestone, dolomite, and some types of soils. It is shown that the probability of non-capture in slowing down depends on the moisture content of the soil and changes in the range over a dozen percent. (auth)
