METHODS OF PRODUCTION AND RESEARCH ON TRANSCURIUM ELEMENTS
Progress in the methods used for the production of transcurium isotopes since 1955 is summarized. Experimentally dctermined isotopic compositions resulting from long-term irradiations of isotopes in the Materials Testing Reactor are glven. Tables of neutron cross sections consistent with the experimental data are listed. Calculated curves for isotopic compositions as a function of neutron flux and time are given for neutron fluxes as high as 5 x 10/ sup 15/. A summary of the information available on the chemnical properties of the transcurium elements is given emphasizing developments of the past three years, Recently developed techniques and methods are described for the preparation and having of targets for charged particle bombardments. Methods used for rapid separations by chemical and recoil methods are described. Data are given concerning several types of procedures for preparing thin sources, A summary is given of the cross sections for the production of transcurium isotopes in bombardments with charged particles an very heavy ions; a method for calculating the excitation functions for heavy ion reactions is included.
