Medical applications of radiation

The present status of nuclear medicine in Japan is reviewed. Ststistical data are given on radiological equipment and facilities installed in several institutions, kinds of radioisotopes used for diagnosis and therapy, and administered doses to patients. The development of basic stuilies in radiological sciences in Japan is discussed and the present application of radioisotopes for diagnosis and therapy is described, especially for cases of head and neck cancer, lung and esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, carcinoina of the bladder, and uterine cancer. Several points of future estimation are given for the development of nuclear medicine in Japan as a whole. (JA)
