The mean lives of 16 bound states of /sup 38/Ar were determined from DSA measurements at 14 selected /sup 37/Cl(p, gamma )/sup 38/Ar resonances in the range E/sub p/ = 0.9 to 1.5 MeV. Spins and parities of 20 (p, gamma ) resonances were determined from a precision comparison with corresponding /sup 37/Cl(p, alpha /sub o/)/sup 34/S resonances. Gamma-ray transition stre ngths combined with gamma -ray angular distribution measurements at two resonances determine (or limit) the spins of 15 bound states of /sup 38/Ar. The experimental data on / sup 38/Ar are compared with the results from shell-model calculations. The negative-parity states, especially those with high spin, can be very well described in terms of a model with five active nucleons in the 1d/sub 3/2/ shell and one in either the 1f/sub 7/2/ or 2p/sub 3/2/ shell. For the positive-parity states, the new da ta underline the importance of two-particle four-hole excitations. (auth)
