An evaluation is presented of the state of information relating to the impact of thermal discharges on water quality in the six sections of the United States. Specificially, reports are included on related causes to effects from thermal discharges into aquatic ecosystems. The 52 thermal discharge sites studied all use oncethrough cooling. Many have intake and discharge canals, especially those in the coastal areas where the canals may be several miles in length. A few sites have alternative and supplementary cooling towers for summer use when ambient water temperatures are near the upper thermal limits of local biota. (MCW)
