Several aspects of the UO2-ZrO2 system have been studied and the following conclusions reached: 1) At 2300° C, the UO2-ZrO2 system consists of a homogeneous phase extending from 0 to 100 m/o ZrO2. The crystal structure of this phase changes in a continuous manner from cubic to tetragonal with increasing ZrO2 content. The lowest ZrO2 concentration at which the structure has been recognized as tetragonal lies between 53 and 54 m/o. 2) The temperature at which pure ZrO2 transforms from a monoclinic to a tetragonal structure is lowered drastically by additions of UO2. 3) The existence of a cubic high-temperature modification of ZrO2 appears unlikely.
