CONCERNING THE THEORY OF THE DEUTERON SPLITTING REACTION

If the change in the momentum of a deuteron is sufficiently large, as a result of diffraction scattering of rapid deuterons by a nucleus, deuteron splitting is possible. The cross section of the diffraction splitting is approximately pi RR/sub d/, i.e., of the same order as the cross section of the deuteron breakup, observed by Serber (72, 1008(1947)). By use of the well-known expression for the reaction amplitude the cross section for diffraction splitting is obtained. The energy and angle distribution of the escaping particles have the same character as in the case of a stripping reaction.
