Effect of initial orientation of single-crystal tungsten on its deformation during high-temperature rolling in vacuum (in Russian)

Single-crystal tungsten was rolled in a vacuum of 3 to 5 x 10/sup -5/ mm Hg std at temperatures of 800, 1000, 1200, and 1400 deg C at a rate of 0.1 m/s. Steel rollers were used at 800 to 1200 deg C and alloy rollers at 1400 deg C so that no sticking took place during rolling. Results showed that at all temperatures, the single crystals {001} (110) {001} (110) and {111} (110) even at degrees of deformation of 70 to 75% per pass are deformed without any sign of breakdown. At all rolling temperatures the metal becomes cold-worked, as shown by increase in Vickers hardness; the degree of coldworking decreases with temperature. The coldworking and also the deformability do not depend on initial orientation. Samples were rolled to a final thickness of 1 mm by various methods. No breakdown could be observed. Thus, hightemperature rolling in vacuum is an effective method of producing high-quality articles from single-crystal refractory metals. (SJR)
