This paper reports the results of a study of hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline and isoquinoline which were chosen as models for nitrogen heterocyclic compounds in coal-derived liquids used a presulfided (Ni-Mo-W/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}) catalyst. The mechanism and the kinetics of the reactions were investigated. Experiments were conducted in a continuous trickle bed reactor at 8.1 MPa hydrogen pressure and a temperature range 325 to 355 C. The starting material consisted of quinoline or isoquinoline. The results obtained showed that all steps appeared to have pseudo-first order kinetics. Kinetic parameters at three temperature levels were calculated. Comparing hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline and isoquinoline, the latter was shown to be more easily denitrogenated than quinoline.
