REMARKS ON PION PRODUCTION IN PION-NUCLEON COLLISIONS AT MODERATE ENERGIES

Some remarks are made concerning pion production in pion-nucleon collisions at incident kinettc energies of frorn 300 to about 600 Mev. A certain representation of the matrix element is discussed which involves explicitly a term that is dependent upon a pion-pion scattering amplitude off the energy shell. A partial-wave decom position of the rest of the transition operator is attempted upon the assumption that the amplitudes so in- troduced contain the effect of strong pion-nucleon interactions in the P wave. Quantities, such as the angular distribution and the polarization of the recoil nucleon, which may be determined largely by the interference between the amplitudes involving specific pion-pion and pion-nucleon effects, are also discussed.
