Heavy water is important as the moderator and coolant for nuclear reactors and in the future as material for fusion reactors. For the heavy-water reactors, efforts to reduce production cost of the heavy water are significant. After briefing on the sources of heavy hydrogen, separation factor, and exchange reaction for the separation, those proce sses currently available with prospect for the cost reduciion are described, namely hydrogen sulfide-water (GS process), ammonia-hydrogen, amine-hydrogen and waterhydrogen exchange methods, and distillation method. Because of reversible nature, the exchange reaction is mosi promising as industrial process; and the GS process will remain as such hereafter. If an industrial device of transferring /sup 2 /H from source water to hydrogen is realized, the ammonia-hydrogen, amine-hydrogen or hydrogen distillation method can be competitive with the GS process.
