Geothermal electricity production

An evaluation is attempted of the institutional and economic facts that take part in determining the future scale of geothermal development in the short- term. Three dry steam geothermal fields exist and are operable in Italy, the U. S., and Japan. These are the only ones and appear to be less common. It will be unfortunate if explorations prove no more dry steam reserves since in economic terms the operation is simple. Hot water or wet steam fields developed for electric power production are operating at Wairakei field and Rawerau, New Zealand; Otake, Japan; Pauzhetska and Paratunka in the Soviet Union; Namafjall, Iceland; and Cerro Prieto, Mexico. The production and economic factors of these developments are discussed. (MCW)
