The nature of the γ-phase in zirconium-hydrogen alloys

Journal Article · · Journal of the Less-Common Metals
Thc microstructure of ZrH1.27 which was slowly cooled after hydriding at 800 deg C and annealing at 500 deg C, consists of alpha -Zr and twinned of f.c. tetragonal gamma phase (ZrH) in a matrix of fcc delta phnse (ZrH1.60). Aging at room temperature resulted in increased gamma phase at the alpha -- delta interface, while the amount of gamma phase in the matrix remained constant. Thus, the gamma phase is a stable phase forraed by a peritectoid reaction between alpha and delta . At the other end of the Zr--H phase diagram, the embrittling, needle-shaped phase at low H is the gamma phase.
