Variational calculation of the first 1sn1 levels of the helium atom in the modified adiabatic approximation is carried out. The degree of the adiabatic coupling between the state of the ls electron and the instantaneous position of the outer nl electron is described by the variable adiabaticity coefficient alpha . The optimum values of the adiabaticity coefficient are calculated. They differ substantially from unity when the nl electron is inside the cloud of the ls electron. The variational calculation has shown marked refinement of the first 1sn1 levels in comparison with the ordinary adiabatic approximation. (auth)
