In the collision of a metastable atom A* with atom B, whose ionization potential is lower than the excitation potential of the metastable atom. a possible ionization process of atom B (Penning process) is A* + B yields A + B/ sup +/ + e DELTA E. The effective cross section for this process was measured for He-Ne-Ar and He-Ne-Xe mixtures over a range of temperatures. The experimental procedure is described ln some detail. It was found that the effective cross section increases with increasing temperature: for collisions with Ar, the change in the cross section occurred over a wide range; but for collisions with Xe, the increase in effective cross section was comparable to the measurement error.
