ABS>The potential distribution was determined in the cainode fall region with a glowing cathode in normal and abnormal Re, Ne, Ar, H/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/ discharges. The field intensity pattern on the axis of the discharge was determined by differentiation of the potential curve. The results of the measurement were compared with the mobility theory given by Warren and it was established that this theory described correctly the ratio between the glow discharge light and the cathode in the first half of the cathode fall region. In the immediate cathode vicinity, deviations appeared for which an explanation was sought. (tr-auth)
