Chlorination of zircon sand

Journal Article · · Can. Met. Quart., v. 12, no. 3, pp. 331-340
The reaction between zircon sand and chlorine in the presence of calcined petroleum coke was studied in a static boat reactor and in an electrothermal fluid bed reactor. In the static chlorination studies, the individual effects of temperature, carbon/ zircon ratio and per cent chlorine in the chlorinating gas were evaluated. In the fluid bed chlorination studies chlorine utilization was evaluated as a function of temperature, gas velocity and bed depth. The electrothermal fluid bed was found to be ideally suited for this particular chlorination reaction. (auth)
