Excitation of the 2s and 2p states of hydrogen in fast collisions between hydrogen atoms

Journal Article · · J. Phys., B (London), v. 7, no. 1, pp. 142-148
A modulated crossed-beam technique was used to determine cross sections for the processes H(1s) 1 H(1s) -- H(2p or 2s) + H( SIGMA ) within the energy range 4 to 26 keV. Results were based on measurements of the Lyman- alpha radiation emitted from the beam intersection region both in the absence and in the presence of an electric field large enough to produce complete quenching of the metastable 2s state. A Doppler-shift technique was used to distinguish between the emissions from both the target and projectile atoms. In general, the measured cross sections are larger than the values predicted theoretically. As part of a check on the experimental procedure measurements were also carried out using Ar and H/sub 2/ targets and good agreement is found between the present results and previous experimental data.
