Reaction K$sup -$ + n $Yields$ K$sup -$ + $pi$$sup -$ + p

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4318137
An analysis of the reaction K/sup -/ + n yields K/sup -/ + pi /sup -/ + p is pre sented. Experimental data were obtained from an exposure of the Saclay bubble chamber filled with deuterium to a 3-GeV/c incident momentum K/sup - / beam obtained from the CERN proton synchrotron. Attention is paid to the problems encountered in extracting the mentioned neutron reaction from the deuteron reaction K/sup -/ + d yields K/sup -/ + pi /sup -/ + p + p/sub s. Although K pi scattering experiments are impossible to carry out, the reaction K/ sup -/ + n yields K/sup -/ + pi sup-/ + p, assuming pi exchange to be dominant at low neutron-proton four-momentum transfer (t/sub np/), enables information to be obtained on the elastic K/sup -/ pi /sup / scattering by extrapolation in t/sub np/, to t/sub np/ = mu /sup 2/ ( mu = pion mass ). Insertion of the Duerr- Pilkuhn form factors in the Chew-- Low extrapolation method may be desirable. The K/sup -/ pi /sup -/ scattering in the reaction K/ sup -/ + n yields K/sup -/ + pi /sup -/ + p was studied. The value of K/ sup - / pi /sup -/ elastic scattering cross section, found by extrapolation, is small, on the average 2 mb in the region from threshold up to 1.2 GeV K/sup -/ pi /sup -/ center of mass energy. An attempt was made to measure the s- and p-wave phase shifts of the K- pi - scattering. Although data do not permit an accurate determination, the p-wave phase shift is found to be consistent with zero up to 1.1 GeV and the absolute value of the s-wave phase shift is found to increase slowly from ~5 deg in the threshold region up to ~15 deg at 1.1 GeV. Data on the reaction K/sup -/ + n yields K/sup -/ + pi /sup -/ + p at 3 GeV/c, and also those obt ained by other experimentalists at 5.5 and 12.6 GeV/c incident momenta, are compared with a model which contains pion and pomeron exchange. In the amplitudes for these two processes the K/sup -/ pi /sup -/ scattering and the pomeron-neutron intcraction are described by Veneziano (four-point) amplitudes and combined with a kind of reggeized'' pion and pomeron exchange respectively. The model gives a reasonably good description of the data of all three experiments. (auth)
