AN ATTEMPT TO EXTRACT URANIUM FROM SULFATE SOLUTIONS WITH TRIBUTYL PHOSPHATE

X-ray analysis of ammonium uranyl carbonate, (NH/sub 4/)/sub 4/UO/sub 2/ (CO/sub 3/)/sub 3/, gave the following measurements for the K/sub 4/UO/sub 2/(CO/ sub 3/)sub 3/ showed that for the hexagonal compound it is monoclinic and is isotopic with the corresponding amium salt. The x-ray analysis gave the following surements for the unit cell: a plus or minus 10.22 plus or minus 0.01 A, b = 9.18 plus or minus 0.02 A, c = 12.18 plus or minus 0.01 A, and BETA = 94 deg 47' plus or minus 6'. The ber of the formula unit per cell is Z plus or minus 4. The density wasdetermined as 3.450 g/cm/sup 3/, while the density calculated from x-ray data was 3.54 g/cm/sup 3/. On the basis of the systematic diffraction, the diffraction symbol and the characteristic spatial group were found. The x-ray data were obtained from the rotational crystal absorption the b and c axes, as well as from the Weissenberg absorption of the equator and of both first layer lines the same axes with copper radiation ( lambda = 1.5418 A).
