Title: Reaction of aluminum titanate crucibles with molten uranium

Journal Article · · J. Nucl. Mater., v. 49, no. 2, pp. 238-240

Melting experiments were conducted at 1140 to 1250 deg C for 5 to 45 min in BETA -Al/sub 2/TiO/sub 5/-coated Ti crucibles. The U pellets, which originally contained 10 ppM Al and 0.2 ppM Ti, were found to pick up 50 to 100 ppM Al and Ti. The black ALT coating had no spalling or cracking, but a brown UO/ sub 2/ film was formed. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out on the interface. The reduction of ALT by U and the reasons for its slow rate are discussed. (DLC)
