SQUARE WAVE POLAROGRAPHY. PART IV. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF SQUARE WAVE POLAROGRAPHY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4317989
A simplified account of the theoretical aspects of square wave polarography is presented and expressions are derived for the alternating part of the current density at the surface of a dropping mercury electrode when the electrode potential has a square wave component and the electrode reaction is (a) completely reversible, (b) slightly irreversible and (c) highly irreversible. For each type of reaction the variation of wave height with potential is considered and formulae are given which can be used to calculate the maximum wave height and the half-wave width. The use of an analytical type of square wave polarograph for the determination of diffusion coefficients and rate constants and for the identification of reversible and irreversible reactions is also discussed.
