The strength of the He I lambda6678 line in OB supergiants

Comparison of measured strengths of the He I lambda 6678 in 27 OB supergiants with recent calculations by Auer and Mihalas indicate that the non- LTE computations completely fail to explain the observed behavior of the line. It is suggested that this failure reflects the dominance of extended envelope and/ or velocity field effects in the line formation process in supergiant atmospheres. (auth)
