The physical bases of the plastic deformation and fracture of Be are reported. Results of studies on the basic, prismatic, and pyramidal slips and twinning in monocrystals and the dependence of the mechanical characteristics of polycrystals on the grain size and impurity concentration are also reported. The dislocation mechanisms of the elementary forms of deformation and fracture were determined and are described. A comparative analysis was made of the plastic deformation of metals with hexagonal structure. (200 references) (tr-auth)
