Declassified 28 Aug 1973. Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the relative crack detection effectiveness of an eddy current probe coil placed coaxially with a coolant channel and a similar coil placed on edge. It was found that the coaxial coil detected longitudinal defects most effectively, while the coil on edge detected transverse defects most effectively. It was also found that two coils mounted on edge and positioned 90 deg apant detected both longitudinal and transverse defects located anywhere on the circumference. (auth)
