THE URANIUM-OXYGEN SYSTEM: U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$ TO UO$sub 3$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4317121
Results of investigations on the uranium-oxygen sysstems are presented. A survey of recent publications is included in order to present a complete picture of current work in this field. Studies of the structure of U/sub 4/O/sub 9/ indicate that the oxide may not crystallize in the simple fluorite lattice which has been geneally accepted for this comn.pound. The U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ phase has a relatively narrow composition range below which it converts to a larger orthorhombic cell whose composition range extends fromn UC/sub 2.56/x to UO/sub 2.65/. The preparation and some properties of four crystalline modification of UO/sub 3/ are described as well as methods for interconversion of structural types. Studies of UC/sub 3/ hydrates under various conditions of temperature and pressure are included. Alkali metal uranate systems were investigated at elevated temperatures, and their methods of preparation are described The preparation or zinc and lead uranates and their thermal stability are discussed.
