Title: Coriolis anti-pairing transition in a simplified shell model with the symmetry of R(5) x R(5)

Journal Article · · Nucl. Phys., A, v. A222, no. 3, pp. 445-458

A shell model with the symmetry of R(5) and a spectrum interpretable as that of a two-dimensional rotator--vibrator has been studied previously. By considering a direct sum of two such systems and allowing them to exchange angular momentum but not particles, a Mottelson -Valatin phase transition is exhibited under a wide range of values of the parameters characterizing the systems. Solutions are also studied under conditions of particle transfer, which is found to inhibit the phase transition from occurring. All results were obtained by an approximation method (the algebraic-variational method) substantiated in previous works. It is finally indicated how the mechanism of Stephens and Simon-the decoupling from the core of a few particles with individually lange angular momenta--can also be incorporated within the framework of the class of models considered.
