NUCLEAR DECAY SCHEME ANALYSIS AND CHARACTERIZATION STUDIES OF (d,/cap alpha/ ) REACTION PRODUCTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4316427
A study was made to assess the value of a fluorescent plastic detector for use in beta ray spectroscopy. This led to the design, construction, and evaluation of a hollow-type scintillation beta ray spectrometer. The performance of the device was evaluated. A new method of solution for the analysis of complex radioactive decay curves is proposed. Characterization studies were made of the isotopes Co/sup 62/, Y/sup 92/, Ir/sup 196/, and Sc/sup 47/ whi ch were produced by the (d, alpha ) reaction in cyclotronbombarded targets. Chemical separations were required in all cases, and carrier-free procedures were developed for cobalt, yttrium, and scandium. New decay schemes are proposed for Co/sup 62/ and Y/sup 92/. The previous assignment of an 8 day activity of iridium to Ir/sup 196/ is shown to be incorrect, the activity being due to Ir/sup 189/ and Ir/sup 190/. New gamma ray information is given for Ir/sup 189/ and Ir/ sup 190/, together with excitation functions for the (d, alpha ) reaction on Pt/ sup 194/ and Pt/sup 196/ for deuteron energies at 9.6 to 20.8 Mev. The gamma ray information obtained from the scandium work verifies the data reported recently by others. (W.D.M.)
