Plasma heating by fast THETA compression has been studied using an initial plasma with T/sub i/>T/sub e/ and n~10/sup 14/ cm/sup -3/, which is prod uced by collision of two plasma streams ejected from THETA -pinch guns. Both ions and electrons are heated up to 3-4 keV with a maximum heating rate of 20 eV/ nsec. After the magnetic field becomes maximum, two-temperature distributions are observed for the ions. (auth)
